## Overview

A day inland to Nizwa, the old capital of the interior, for its great round-towered fort, its souq of silver and pottery, and a village lunch.

Nizwa lies at the foot of the Hajar Mountains, about one and a half to two hours' drive from Muscat. It was once the capital of Oman's interior and is still a centre of trade and craft.

The day begins at Nizwa Fort, known for its massive round tower built in the seventeenth century. A guide explains its defences and the history of the region from the top of the tower. The group then explores the souq, with sections for silver, pottery, spices, dates and halwa. On Friday mornings a traditional livestock market takes place nearby, which is lively to watch.

Lunch is served in a traditional house or local restaurant. On the way back the group can stop at an old mud-brick village or a second castle.
