Ephesus is an hour from Izmir by coach and one of the best-preserved Roman cities in the Mediterranean. We enter at the upper gate early in the morning and walk downhill along Curetes Street to the Library of Celsus and the 24,000-seat Great Theatre, so nobody has to climb in the heat.

Our guides are trained archaeologists who explain the city as a working port: its markets, baths, and the politics behind the monuments. The covered Terrace Houses, with their mosaics and wall paintings, are included and are the part most groups remember.

Lunch is in the hill village of Şirince, with time to walk its lanes before the coach back. In July and August we start at 08:00 to finish the site before midday.
