Overview

Not a statistics course. In facilitated labs, teams work through realistic cases and simulations with dashboards, noisy data and a deadline, and practise the habits that make data useful in meetings: clear questions, honest uncertainty and a decision at the end.

The business problem

Most companies have more dashboards than ever, yet many meetings still end in opinion contests. Numbers are presented without context, charts are read in different ways, and uncertainty is either ignored or used as a reason not to decide. The gap is rarely the data itself; it is the shared habits around using it.

How we run it

Diagnose. We look at how your teams use data today: which reports drive decisions, where debates get stuck and which decisions are coming up. Design. We build the lab around cases from your world (pricing, demand planning, customer churn, hiring) using realistic or anonymised numbers. Run. Teams work through short challenges: framing the question, spotting a misleading chart, estimating with ranges rather than single numbers, and making a recommendation under time pressure. Debrief. The facilitator compares how teams reasoned and what they missed. Follow-up. Teams agree a one-page standard for presenting data in decision meetings, and we review it in use after 30 days.

Formats

  • Half day: a data detective lab or a forecasting tournament, ideal inside a larger meeting.
  • Full day: a full lab with a business simulation, live dashboards and a session on your own reports.
  • 2–3 day offsite or summit: labs combined with planning sessions, for example before budget season.

How we measure impact, honestly

We use the lab itself as a baseline: teams make estimates and recommendations at the start and the end, so you can see how their reasoning changed. A short pulse survey before and after asks how confident people feel using data in decisions, and a 30-day review looks at whether the agreed presentation standard is being used in real meetings.

Questions

Didn't find your answer?

  • Event designers reply within one business day. Onsite teams are reachable 24/7 during events.
Do participants need to be analysts?
No. The labs are for people who use data to make or support decisions. We avoid formulas and focus on judgement: questions, context, uncertainty and clear recommendations.
Do we have to share our company data?
No. We can work entirely with realistic sample data. If you want to use your own, we only need anonymised extracts, and we can sign a confidentiality agreement.
Do participants need laptops?
For the full-day lab, one laptop or tablet per team of four to six is enough; we can provide devices. The half-day formats work with printed materials.
Can this be part of a bigger conference?
Yes. The data detective lab and the forecasting tournament work well as breakout sessions or as an interactive plenary for up to several hundred people.
