Objective
Practise calm communication and shared problem-solving under light pressure.
Materials
- Open space of about 3 × 3 m per group
- A timer
- Optional: short ropes or scarves to hold instead of hands
Step by step
- Split the group into circles of 8–10 people standing shoulder to shoulder.
- Everyone reaches across and takes the hand of two different people, never their direct neighbours.
- Explain the goal: untangle into one open circle without letting go of hands.
- Start the timer and let teams talk it through; step in only if someone is uncomfortable.
- When a team finishes (or after 10 minutes), ask what worked: who led, how were ideas heard?
Facilitator tips
- Allow loosening the grip so wrists can turn; nobody should twist a joint.
- If a knot is impossible, allow one "unlock": a single pair may let go and re-join.
Variations
- Silent round: no talking, gestures only.
- Hold short ropes instead of hands for groups who prefer less contact.
Accessibility
Involves close physical contact and bending. Offer the rope version, and invite anyone who prefers not to take part to act as the "observer" who reports back on communication patterns.
